At present there are two classes that can be tagged as journalism: Introduction to Journalism and Yearbook. Intro to journalism is a full-year course as is yearbook. In the two classes that meet every day I have 45-minutes per class (minus attendance and instructional/direction time) to impart what I know that the students will need to know on how to create a yearbook and a school newspaper. This is the first year that my school has had a yearbook class and a journalism class with both classes having a staff to create both publications. Next year I want to step up the pace somewhat to include a newspaper web site with videos, pod casts, and so forth. The yearbook class is a one year course. The students who are trained on the software this year are ineligible to take the class next year. I therefore lose a completely trained staff and have to start over training a new staff. Any suggestions on how to convey to admin that it would be better if this year's non-senior yearbook staff could take the class again for credit too?

Re: High School Yearbooks can use Google Docs to make the index cleanup more manageable | Journalism Education Association Digital Media

As a high school yearbook adviser I have have to clean up the book before sending the pages off electronically. We have a fall book--because we've always done it that way--which means I work on the book during the summer months to get it ready for printing. Indexes are often a bugaboo; your suggestion to use Google Docs for this grueling task is a refreshing bit of info.

Re: Free storyboard solutions available for download | Journalism Education Association Digital Media

will have to check them out

Re: A Checklist of Digital Media Things To Consider Before Closing Out the Year | Journalism Education Association Digital Media

My web and multimedia editor need to check this post out! http://tinyurl.com/2992k8u

Re: [Presentation] Web Only: Taking Newspapers Online - by Steve Matson | Journalism Education Association Digital Media

Never mind!
There are a variety of online degrees that you can earn, no matter what your field of interest or experience. Some examples are: accounting, health, technology, psychology and business administration. A lot of the time when you are pursuing online degrees while employed in a related career, employers may give you tuition assistance. Look into opportunities like this at your place of employment. With additional education and an online degree you can be proud of, you may even find yourself climbing higher on the corporate ladder with a raise or promotion…………

You can find it in the Applications folder. Doesn't do timed screens, but it is far superior to the old "Print Screen" method.

Re: [Presentation] Web Only: Taking Newspapers Online - by Steve Matson | Journalism Education Association Digital Media

Great presentation! Good points/questions. Your first point regarding legal action and/or teachers/coaches performing their jobs shows just how individual this idea can be. Again, staffs would need to discuss what's acceptable and what's not on a case-by-case basis.

As for your second point, you bring up an important clarification - namely, that staffs can individually determine the level of security/scrutiny they want to allow on their site. Some, as you've mentioned, require full names (although what prevents them from using another name? Who checks this?). Some require comments to go through a "holding pen" verification process before they post.

(On a side note, I find this both ironic and enlightening that we're having this discussion via the "comments" section on this story. Pretty cool demonstration of the validity of the process.)

Re: ‘Comments are Closed.’ Whether to allow online commentary not always easy choice. | Journalism Education Association Digital Media

I think, though, that if legal action is currently pending or if the discussion to be had on the topic may harm the teacher/coach's ability to perform his job, then it would be a good idea to close comment.

We're new to the online world, and we do allow commenting. We've been requiring full names, though, to keep everyone honest. I see you say that your comments can be relatively anonymous. What do you think about comment posting requirements as they pertain to names/usernames?

Re: VoiceThread: Narrated Slide Shows | Journalism Education Association Digital Media

Excellent suggestion, Paul.

Sometimes, a user needs to customize what files are uploaded and that customized functionality is not available in pre-packaged ftp client. In that case, the operating system's native ftp commands, and a scripting language can be very helpful. For example, if you want to upload all .html files MODIFIED since Jan 1, 2010, here is a script you can use.

var str site, login, pswd
set $site = "ftp.mysite.com"
set $login = "me"
set $pswd = "my_password"
echo $login "\n" $password > "commandfile.txt"

var str list, file
lf -n "*.html" "/myhtmlfiles" ($fmtime >= "20100101") > $list
while ($list <> "")
do
lex "1" $list > $file
echo "put " $file >> "commandfile.txt"
done

echo "bye" >> "commandfile.txt"
system ftp "-s:commandfile.txt " $site

The above script will batch upload all .html files modified since 20100101 to site "ftp.mysite.com". This script is in biterscripting ( http://www.biterscripting.com ), but any other scripting language can be used too.

I think getting people to be a part of the story is interesting. I just don't want it to take the place of the news ... the actual reporting. Because that's where problems can start. It's a really interesting approach, as long as it doesn't replace the one where you know, facts are verified and what not.
